Who this is for

Intended audience

GROL holders and marine-electronics candidates preparing for the FCC Ship Radar Endorsement Element 8 written examination.

Relevant industries: Maritime, Marine Electronics, Commercial Radio

Learning outcomes

What learners will work toward

  • Apply radar principles, timing, transmitter, receiver, display, ranging, ARPA, antenna, waveguide, installation, maintenance, and safety concepts.
  • Interpret the controlled technical figures and complete all 300 pool questions with objective-linked remediation.
  • Complete fresh 50-topic simulations with answer keys and figures kept outside the public web bundle until required.
  • Use current equipment documentation and safe-service boundaries, then hand off to an authorized COLEM for official credit.

Course outline

5 modules

  1. Subelement A: Radar principles and timing

Marine radar systems, range, timing, power, pulse behavior, components, and circuits.

  2. Subelement B: Transmitters and modulation

Magnetrons, pulse-forming networks, duplexing, synchronization, and power supplies.

  3. Subelement C: Receivers and signal processing

Mixers, oscillators, amplifiers, detection, AFC, clutter, interference, and supply circuits.

  4. Subelement D: Displays, ranging, and ARPA

Displays, sweep and timing, markers, bearing, memory, ARPA/CAS, and display faults.

  5. Subelements E–F: RF path, maintenance, and safety

Antennas, transmission lines, waveguides, fault isolation, installation, maintenance, and safety.

Assessment and completion

Requirements stay explicit.

Assessment plan: Protected 300-question official-pool mastery and fresh 50-question mocks using one item from every key topic. The benchmark is 38 correct (76%); mock results are not official FCC results.

Completion languageEligible learners receive an IM Academi Element 8 Exam Preparation Certificate of Completion. It is not an official FCC pass, PPC, Ship Radar Endorsement, GROL, COLEM result, installation approval, or practical sign-off.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is this an official OSHA or third-party certification?

No. IM Academi will identify the course provider and the exact completion outcome. It will not imply OSHA authorization, regulatory qualification, or another organization's certification unless the applicable authorization has been obtained and documented.

Does my employer still need to provide site-specific training?

Often, yes. Site hazards, procedures, equipment, emergency plans, supervision, and role authorization remain employer responsibilities. This page states course-specific boundaries but cannot replace an employer's hazard assessment.

What happens if a practical component is required?

The knowledge portion and practical evaluation are tracked separately. Final completion depends on the published course rules and a documented evaluation by an approved evaluator.
