Course outline

9 modules

  1. Orientation, Scope, and Credential Boundary

    Begin by separating three records: an IM Academi online completion certificate, an employer-issued hot-work authorization/permit, and an employer-validated fire-watch assignment. Only the first is issued by this course. Explain that OSHA does not approve IM Academi and that the online course is not a welding qualification. Learners must acknowledge that site conditions, the employer's permit program, atmospheric testing, fire protection, and the authority having jurisdiction control actual work.

  2. Hot Work, Fire Behavior, and Ignition Sources

    Define hot work broadly enough to include welding, cutting, brazing, soldering, heating, torch-applied work, grinding and other spark-producing operations when covered by the employer or sector rule. Teach the fire triangle and the practical meaning of fuel, oxygen and heat. Show how sparks travel, how hot slag falls through openings, and how conduction or radiation can ignite the opposite side of a bulkhead, wall, deck, pipe, insulation or coating. Introduce incipient-stage fire limits without turning this course into extinguisher-user qualification.

  3. Regulatory Sectors and Hot-Work Roles

    Present separate general-industry, construction, and shipyard overlays. General industry uses the familiar 35-foot combustible-control framework and written authorization preference in 1910.252. Construction uses 1926.352 and related welding/cutting provisions. Shipyard work adds Part 1915 Subparts B, D and P, including Marine Chemist, Coast Guard-authorized person, shipyard competent person, fire-prevention program manager, hot worker and fire-watch interfaces. Stress that the most protective applicable requirement and the employer's written program govern.

  4. Hot-Work Permit Fundamentals

    Teach the permit as a time-, place-, scope-, and condition-specific authorization tool rather than a permanent license. Required instructional fields include work description, exact location, date/time, combustibles, openings and adjacent spaces, fire protection, atmospheric-testing authority and results, ventilation, fire-watch determination, PPE, impairment controls, emergency contacts, signatures, reinspection and closeout. A permit is invalid when conditions or scope change beyond its approval basis.

  5. Area Preparation and Combustible Control

    Inspect above, below, behind and on the opposite side of the work. Remove combustibles when practicable; where removal is not possible, use approved shielding, blankets, curtains, barriers or other controls compatible with the hazard. Address floor openings, penetrations, drains, cable runs, insulated piping, coatings, wall cavities, combustible floors, temporary enclosures, sprinkler and alarm impairments, and housekeeping. The general- industry 35-foot value is taught as a regulatory trigger—not as a universal safe radius.

  6. Atmospheres, Confined/Enclosed Spaces, Coatings, and Ventilation

    Teach that smell, appearance and previous safe work do not establish a safe atmosphere. Review oxygen, flammability and toxic-hazard concepts, including the possibility that welding, cutting or heating can create contaminants or disturb coatings and residues. Explain why shipyard and confined/enclosed-space work may require testing or certification by a Marine Chemist, Coast Guard-authorized person or shipyard competent person. Ventilation must be selected for the process and cannot be replaced by oxygen enrichment.

  7. Equipment, Cylinders, Electrical, PPE, and Work-Practice Awareness

    Provide awareness of cylinder identification, securing, valve protection, separation from heat and damage, hose/regulator condition, leak response, flashback/fire risk, torch shutdown, welding leads, grounding/return paths, wet-area electrical hazards, screens, eye/face protection, protective clothing, hearing protection and respiratory hazards. Manufacturer instructions and employer procedures control actual use. Oxygen must never be used for ventilation, cleaning clothing or pneumatic purposes.

  8. Fire-Watch Awareness, Emergency Actions, and Post-Work Monitoring

    Describe when a fire watch may be required, while repeating that this online course does not qualify one. Shipyard fire watches may not perform other duties while hot work is underway; they need clear view and immediate access, communication with exposed workers, authority to stop work, appropriate equipment, alarm knowledge and post-work presence. Teach that an incipient fire may be attacked only when it is within the person's training and available equipment; otherwise alert, evacuate and activate the emergency process. Discuss at least 30 minutes of post-work watch where specified, plus any longer employer/AHJ period.

  9. Integrated Scenarios and Final Review

    Apply the course to refinery pipe work, construction steel, shipyard bulkhead welding, grinding near cable runs, hot work in a temporary enclosure and work near an impaired sprinkler zone. Each scenario requires the learner to identify the sector, authority, permit status, atmospheric-testing need, combustible controls, fire-watch decision, emergency actions, post-work requirements and credential boundary.

Requirements stay explicit.

Assessment plan: 40-question protected staging QA assessment; 80% plus the critical-item rule. The 40-item draft seed bank must expand to 120 independently approved items before paid release.

Frequently asked

Is this an official OSHA or third-party certification?

No. IM Academi will identify the course provider and the exact completion outcome. It will not imply OSHA authorization, regulatory qualification, or another organization's certification unless the applicable authorization has been obtained and documented.

Does my employer still need to provide site-specific training?

Often, yes. Site hazards, procedures, equipment, emergency plans, supervision, and role authorization remain employer responsibilities. This page states course-specific boundaries but cannot replace an employer's hazard assessment.

What happens if a practical component is required?

The knowledge portion and practical evaluation are tracked separately. Final completion depends on the published course rules and a documented evaluation by an approved evaluator.
